Resenting the Graduate Record Exam

From Rachel Smith, for About.com

My first step in applying for grad school is the GRE. The stupid GRE. I totally resent having to take a standardized test to enter into advanced and specialized studies. Supposedly the GRE predicts how likely you are to finish your graduate studies. I’d like to see proof of this. If no one is accepting people who haven’t taken the GRE, how can that be tested? It sounds like a racket to me. Plus I stink at math. Maybe I’d feel differently about the test if I didn’t. Since I’m planning to study Art History I know my math score is not that important but I refuse to believe that someone reviewing my application would not be influenced by a pathetically low math score.

So I got a book to study. Probably one of the most important things I need to do well on this test is an attitude adjustment. The book I bought though has these snarky comments about ETS. Not much help for my attitude adjustment, but entertaining enough to keep me studying. I have a suggested schedule that says I should be prepared to take the test in eight weeks. I’m currently a week and a half behind schedule. I think I’m letting myself get behind because I haven’t actually scheduled my test yet. Once I have a day and put my money down that might help me stay on track. I should probably do that very soon.
