This is not an uncommon question for new professors. It sounds confusing but assistant professors, the entry-level rank for faculty members, are not assistants. They carry out the duties common to professors of all ranks: teaching, research, and service. As a graduate student you should be aware of academic ranks. Know the differences among the following types of professors: assistant professor, associate professor, professor, and adjunct professor.
