Reader Question: MA or PhD for Forensic Psychology?
Currently I'm finishing my Bsc. in Biological Sciences from a university in India. I want to become a Psychologist, specializing in Forensic Psychology. But I'm really confused about the career path I should take to get there. If I want to study in the USA, should I try to get into a Masters program or a PhD?
Also, since I'm doing my undergrad in India, I've only had 12+3 years of education. I've heard that most universities at the US require a 12+4. So where all am I eligible to apply?
There are two questions here. First, what is the best degree to become a forensic psychologist?
Unquestionably it is the doctoral degree, preferably the PhD. There are very few forensic psychology programs. Instead most forensic psychologists have PhDs in Clinical Psychology. They develop a specialization in forensic psychology through their choice of internship site, and especially, with post-graduate experiences, including fellowships, post-docs, and internships.
As for your second question, graduate programs typically require a bachelor's degree or "it's foreign equivalent." That means that your Bsc. makes you eligible. Best of luck!
