Tackling the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) Section of the GMAT's

AWA Preparation Tips

By Tara Kuther, Ph.D., About.com Guide

The following tips can help you prepare for the AWA section of the GMAT's. It is recommended that you consider these pointers to help you prepare for the AWA.

Tips:

  • Structure – It is important that your essay have an intro, 2-3 body paragraphs that includes the content, and a conclusion (Spend a few minutes in the beginning organizing your essay).
  • Writing Style – Write in English, use proper grammar, and spell correctly.
  • Transitional Phrases – Use words or sentences that connect statements within and between paragraphs, such as “first”, “therefore”, “however” and “additionally.”
  • Conform – Because a computer will be grading your essay and comparing it to high-scoring essays, specific words and statements are being searched for. Therefore, do not try to be individualistic or include humor or poetic prose. Go with the norm and write a common type of essay that includes conventional information.
  • Clarity – Clearly state your facts and experiences in the Analysis of an Issue sub-section and your critiques and flaws in the Analysis of an Argument section.
  • Practice – Practice writing essays several times before you take the exam.
