Each
week I receive many questions. Here are a few questions that I thought might be
of interest to others. If your question isn't answered here, raise it in the
forum or email me. Topics range from career assessment to finding programs in
the arts.
Question
Where do I start? I'm overwhelmed with the amount of information out there! I'm thinking about a PhD, but I don't know what I want
to do and I don't know where to begin.
Answer
Your first step is to determine where your
interests lie. Take some time and ask yourself the hard questions. It's
difficult, but try to be honest with yourself. These links will help you

You Go? Question I am interested in applying for a graduate degree in counseling. I am
a middle aged high school teacher with a certificate in counseling drug/alcohol abuse within the school. I am
very interested in family and group work and am thinking in terms of a second, part-time career. Can you give me any assistance in selecting an
appropriate field? Answer It sounds like a graduate degree in counseling may be a
nice option for you. With a masters in counseling or an MFT (marriage and family therapy
degree), and appropriate credentialing, it is possible to work in a private
practice setting. Note that after you obtain the
degree, there are either licensure or certification requirements (varying by state) before you can set up a private practice.
Most states require 600-700 hours of supervised therapy. Given your experience with drug
and alcohol abuse counseling and your experience in the schools, you might be interested
in this as a second career.
