Graduate Study in
Psychology: Graduate School Questions & Answers
Question: I'm applying to graduate school in a couple of months and I wonder how competitive I am for graduate study in psychology. I've majored in psychology, have a 4.0 GPA and the GRE scores from 570-650. I've also participated in a 10 week Research Experience for Undergraduates program, have strong letters of recommendation, served as the Psychology Club president, work for a psychologist and have make a poster presentation and an oral presentation at a research symposium. What do you think? Should I retake the GRE?
Whether you're competitive for graduate study in psychology depends on what field you're seeking to enter. Clinical psychology programs are highly competitive. Even though your credentials sound very good, the field is so competitive that I can't make predictions for you. I would advise you to apply to a range of programs so that you have a safety school. You might want to also apply to a few counseling programs.

You've done everything that I typically advise students to do. You've got
research and practical experience, good letters, and your GRE scores are fine. I wouldn't retake the GRE unless you're certain that you can raise your
scores more than 30 points--a change in score less than that won't help you.
Now your job is to be sure that your experiences are communicated in the best light possible. Focus your attention on your application materials and
admissions essay. Ask faculty for feedback on your essay. These links will help as you conceptualize the essays:
