GRE Subject Test

The GRE Subject Tests assess a your knowledge of material emphasized by undergraduate programs as preparation for graduate education.

Not all graduate programs require that you take the GRE Subject test, so before registering for it make sure that you've checked with the programs to which you're applying. Alternatively, consider taking the Subject Test if you're applying to programs outside of your undergraduate major.

Subject Test Facts
  • The GRE subject test are administered by pencil and paper three times a year: November, December, and April.
  • Schedule an appointment with a center near you.
  • Arrive at the test center 30 minutes early. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted and will not be refunded.
  • Bring identification to the test center. v
  • Bring plenty of number 2 pencils.
  • The fee for the GRE Subject Test is $115 in the US and US Territories, $140 in all other locations
  • The GRE Subject Test will take up to three and one-half hours to complete.
  • Study for the GRE Subject test with an upper-level introductory textbook for your discipline.
