Summer Tips for Graduate School Admissions

By , About.com Guide

Think summer time is for rest, recuperation, and fun? Yes, but it's also a great time to prepare for graduate school admissions. If you're planning on applying to graduate school this Fall, start preparing now. Here are 5 things that you can do now that will improve your chances for admission to grad school.

Locate Programs
Search for graduate programs (check out this database of graduate programs). Scope out departmental websites and gather admissions information now. Research potential advisors and take notes on their interests. Conduct your research now and by Fall you'll be confident and ready to narrow your choices and complete your applications.

Plan for Letters of Recommendation
Remember that each application typically requires 3 letters of recommendation. Think about the faculty in your department and consider who to ask for letters of recommendation.

Prepare for the GRE
If you haven't taken the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) yet , begin preparing for it now. Schedule your exam no later than early Fall, preferably sooner, but take the time to prepare well.

Verify Your Transcript
Get a copy of your transcript and check it carefully. Mistakes happen, and it's your responsibility to be sure that your transcript accurately reflects your academic history.

Research Financial Aid
Gather the documentation that you will need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be eligible for financial assistance.
