Should You Change Your Name During Graduate School?

As graduate students and professionals, our names indicate a whole body of work. Conference attendees scan name tags for familiar names. Names are associated with theories, research, and lifetimes of study. Changing your name is a challenging decision. Here are some thoughts on the issue as well as the pragmatics of a name change after marriage or divorce.

I don’t know that it really matters in all industries but I know in academia, some women choose to keep their maiden name if they have an established publication record. Some chose to add on a new name or hyphenate their names so that people make recognize their work.
