I'm Wait Listed, Now What?

Here is how it's supposed to go: You submit your application and, after a few agonizing months, get a letter indicating that you're accepted or not. Some students find that yes and no aren't the only possible answers. Some are wait-listed, left to wait in a sort of purgatory. What does it mean and how do you manage this in-between status?
