Commuter Student Challenges

In the Graduate School Forum, a reader writes:
For the past four years I have lived apart from my spouse - I commute 3 hours to graduate school, spend 4 days a week with a friend while working, and then return home. It has suddenly become very difficult for me... I am burnt out... The problem is that my funding is secure, that my healthcare expenses are paid, and at the current moment I do not have any prospective jobs in mind.... My plan has been to continue as I have for one more year and then move home to finish my dissertation if need be. The problem is that I am not sure that I can make it... I feel if I do not make some type of change in the near future, then I may not want to pursue an academic career. This feels like such a horrible place to be in given that I do enjoy my work - I just long for some balance in my life. Any advice?
