What to Do When You Advance To Doctoral Candidacy

Graduate school is a long haul with few milestones with which to judge your progress. The lack of markers is part of what makes graduate study, particularly in doctoral programs, a challenge for students' intellectual, emotional, and even physical endurance. Advancement to doctoral candidacy occurs when you've passed your qualifying exams and all other academic requirements (other than the dissertation). This article, from Berkeley's Career Center, explains what's next. In short, your focus is on your dissertation, but also on professional development so that you can make the transition from graduate student to new professional.
