Good question: How do you decide between a masters and doctoral degree in counseling psychology? That really depends on what you'd like to do with it. If you're interested in working with people and not conducting research, then a master's degree in counseling psychology (or counseling, social work, or clinical psychology) will provide you with what you need. However, if you're interested in conducting research, a career in academia, or administration, then a doctoral degree is a better choice.
Note that "psychologist" is a protected term available only to licensed psychologists -- and most states require a doctoral degree for licensure. There is a loophole for master's level practitioners though -- most states allow master's level practitioners to practice as counselors and social workers. Look into the certification requirements in your state and carefully evaluate master's programs to ensure that they will meet the requirements for certification or licensure as a counselor in your state so that you can practice independently. So, if anybody were to get a Ph.D in counseling psychology. The person would be most likely conducting research rather than working with people?
No — but with a PhD comes more options aside from counseling individuals. Many PhD counseling psychologists work exclusively with people; however, if all you’d like to do is therapy, an MA is more cost effective. If you’d like options, such as to conduct research or become a professor, then a PhD is the way to go
then it would still take me 5 years or more to get PHD if I first choose to pursue the Master Degree in counseling psychology??
